Thirty, Flirty & Thriving: Bringing a Movie Moment to Life
This custom birthday video was inspired by the iconic "Thirty, Flirty & Thriving" scene from the film 13 Going on 30. The client wanted to celebrate a milestone birthday by recreating the magic, confidence, and nostalgia of one of her favorite movie moments. After purchasing the outfit worn by the film's main character, she entrusted me with transforming the concept into a cinematic short film.
From pre-production through final delivery, I handled the entire creative process, including storyboarding, directing, cinematography, visual effects, and editing. My goal was to capture the charm of the original film while creating a personalized experience that felt unique to the client.
The project was filmed using my Sony FX2 cinema camera and Nanlite 300 lighting setup, providing an excellent opportunity to continue refining my filmmaking workflow and equipment choices. Throughout production, I gained valuable insights into lighting efficiency, particularly during the closet sequence, where I discovered that achieving a cinematic look often requires less lighting power than expected when light is shaped and positioned effectively.
In post-production, I incorporated camera tracking and visual effects techniques to create a magical transformation sequence. Using 3D animation and compositing workflows, I integrated a glitter effect into the scene, helping recreate the whimsical feeling that made the original movie moment so memorable. The project also became a valuable technical learning experience, allowing me to further explore color workflows and export settings when converting 10-bit footage for 8-bit delivery platforms.
Beyond the final video, this project reinforced the importance of preparation, efficient lighting design, and technical consistency throughout the production pipeline. Each shoot provides an opportunity to grow as a filmmaker, and this production offered valuable lessons that will continue to improve future commercial, narrative, and client projects.
